About This Video

When you first set up an aquarium, it’s basically sterile — no bacteria, no life — and that’s why cycling matters. In this video I break down the aquarium nitrogen cycle in plain terms: waste produces ammonia, bacteria convert that to nitrite, and then another bacteria converts nitrite to nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite are toxic to fish, so the goal of a properly cycled tank is zero ammonia, zero nitrite, and some nitrate showing at the end. I also explain how I like to cycle tanks fast these days, especially for beginners. If you’ve already got established tanks, the easiest shortcut is moving mature filter media into the new filter. But if you don’t have that option, I show my preferred “safe fish-in” method using a good test kit plus a detoxifier and bottled bacteria. I test my tap water first (most people skip that), dose beneficial bacteria daily for 7 days, and test ammonia/nitrite every single day. If I see ammonia or nitrite, I add a detoxifying conditioner so the fish stay safe while the bacteria still get fed. After 7 days I do a big water change (around 50%) and repeat — and in my experience this gets you cycled in about 1–2 weeks if you keep feeding very sparingly.
