About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down everything you need to know about the Black Phantom Tetra (also called the Ghost Tetra) — Megalamphodus megalopterus. I keep them in my tetra community tank, so I’m talking from real, day-to-day experience: where they come from (Brazil and Bolivia), the kind of slow-moving, shoreline-style habitat they’re associated with, and what that means for how I like to set them up in the aquarium. I also cover size (around 1.75 inches / 4.4 cm) and one of my favourite things about them: they’re genuinely easy to sex, with males being darker and often bigger with an elongated dorsal fin, and females showing red on the anal fin. I go into temperament and behaviour as well. The males will spar and do little displays, but in my experience it very rarely leads to damage, and it’s actually pretty cool to watch once a dominant/subdominant pecking order settles in. I also talk group size (I recommend at least 8), tank size (20 gallons / 75 L and up), planting and floating plants for a more shaded, comfortable feel, plus water parameters — roughly pH 6 to 7.2 and temps from 70–82°F (21–28°C). Finally, I cover feeding (they’ll take flakes and granules, but I personally lean granules because I’ve had swim bladder issues when feeding a mostly flake-based diet), plus optional frozen foods like brine shrimp with garlic. I also touch on breeding basics: they’re egg scatterers, they’ll eat the eggs, and you’ll need a plan like leaves/blackwater or a spawning mop and removing the parents if you want fry to stand a chance.
