Atlanta might be one of the most underrated food cities in America. In this episode of my 2026 World Cup food series, I’m in Atlanta, Georgia, to find out why this city deserves a lot more respect when people talk about the best food in the USA. Atlanta is the heart of the American South, a city shaped by history, hospitality, culture and serious comfort food. From proper Southern classics to Texas-style BBQ and one of the best sandwiches I’ve had on the road, this was a city that completely caught me off guard. I start at Homegrown, a cafe serving deep South hospitality on a plate. We’re talking Southern fried chicken, biscuits, fried green tomatoes, grits, collard greens and the kind of food that feels like it’s been cooked with a bit of soul behind it. Then I head to Fox Bros Bar-B-Q, an Atlanta institution started by twin brothers bringing Texas-style BBQ to Georgia. Brisket, ribs, smoke, sauce, sides, the full works. After that, I visit Paschal’s, one of Atlanta’s most iconic restaurants, famous for fried chicken and its deep connection to the city’s history. And finally, I order from Fred’s Meat & Bread to try their Korean cheesesteak, a sandwich that proves Atlanta’s food scene is not just about tradition, it’s also about creativity, cultures colliding and chefs having a bit of fun. This is part of my 16-part series travelling to every 2026 FIFA World Cup host city in North America to find out which city has the best food. I’ve already visited New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, and now I’m in Atlanta to see if the capital of the South can compete with the biggest food cities in America.
