Mexico City might be the greatest taco city on earth. In this episode of my 2026 World Cup food series, I’m in Mexico City to find the best food in CDMX, from Michelin star tacos and legendary street food to seafood tostadas, cantinas, huitlacoche, grasshoppers and some of the most famous taco spots in the city. Mexico City is one of the most exciting food cities in the world. It has street tacos, fine dining, markets, cantinas, seafood, salsas, rare ingredients, old-school institutions and tiny taquerias serving food that can compete with restaurants anywhere on earth. I start at La Once Mil, the newest Michelin star taco spot in Mexico City, to see what makes a tiny taqueria worthy of global attention. Simple tacos, quality meat, tortillas, salsa and a completely different kind of Michelin experience. Then I try tuna tostadas and fish al pastor, before getting into some of the best tacos of the episode, including wagyu and suckling pig tacos. After that, I explore the streets and history of CDMX, before heading to Tacos El Torito, a local legend known for tripe, brisket and proper Mexico City street tacos. Then it’s time for traditional cantina food, including pork milanesa, cold drinks and the kind of old-school room that makes Mexico City’s food culture feel so alive. From there, I visit Tezontle, one of the more up market restaurants in Mexico City, for posh tacos, bespoke salsa and some of the city’s best-known seafood dishes. Then I try huitlacoche, also known as corn fungus, in a soup, before eating grasshopper-covered steak, two of the more unusual dishes on the trip. After that, I go to Tacos Don Juan for classic Mexico City street tacos, before heading to El Pezciosa for incredible fish and prawn tacos. Finally, I finish at Los Cocuyos, a Michelin Bib Gourmand taco spot and one of the most famous late-night taquerias in Mexico City. This is part of my 16-part series travelling to every 2026 FIFA World Cup host city in North America to find out which city has the best food. I’ve visited all of them to explore one of the most important food capitals in the world.
