Join us online for our family program Stories and Art, where we tell stories and look at art together! This month’s story, “The King’s New Clothes,” is based on a story by the medieval Spanish writer Don Juan Manuel and another by the Danish 19th-century author Hans Christian Andersen. The story is paired with two artworks from the Gallery’s collection: a portrait of an emperor made in the style of German artist Albrecht Dürer and a watercolor drawing titled Costume Sketch for Andersen Tales by the Russian artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. As you listen to the story, think about what you notice about the people in each of the artworks. What details stand out to you? Then, get ready to imagine how you would want to be shown in a portrait. What would you wear? What special things would you include from your own life? Try drawing a self-portrait or taking a photo of yourself with things that represent you. We can’t wait to see what you create! Share your creations on Instagram using the hashtag #yaleartgalleryathome.
