HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK, MAUI (2026) | How To Hike The Sliding Sands to Halemau’u Trail

Haleakalā National Park is a massive protected wilderness located on the island of Maui. It’s centered around the towering shield volcano that dominates over 75% of the island’s landscape. The park is uniquely divided into two distinct sections: the Summit Area and the Kīpahulu Coastal Area. These, despite being part of the same park, are not connected by internal roads and must be accessed from completely different sides of the island. Our favorite day hike in this park was a legendary trek from the summit area, connecting the Sliding Sands (Keonehe‘ehe‘e) to the Halemau‘u trail. This challenging point-to-point hike spans 11.7 miles or 18.8 kilometers with an elevation gain of roughly 2,503 feet or 763 meters and even more elevation loss. In total, it takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete, including photo stops as well as lunch and snack breaks.
