Excellent news went around the world: The number of the critically endangered mountain gorillas exceeds 1000 and the population in the Virunga Volcanoes has more than doubled in the last three decades. A rare success story in wildlife conservation. Conservation efforts have brought this critically endangered, charismatic species back from the brink of extinction. The mountain gorillas live in a protected and secured habitat. But it is limited and surrounded by densely populated regions. With the success new challenges come along: As the growing population moves closer to the forest's carrying capacity, mitigating effects of limited resources are conservationists’ next concern. What happens, when the mountain gorilla population grows - but their habitat doesn’t? ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 - Introduction ▷ 01:18 - Bwindi Forest ▷ 03:34 - Studying their Living Environment ▷ 11:26 - Virunga Volcanoes ▷ 12:37 - Dian Fossey ▷ 23:24 - Infanticide ▷ 32:10 - Gorilla Doctors ▷ 51:30 - Credits #documentary #animals #wildlife #gorillas #mountaingorillas #dianfossey #animalplanet ------- Subscribe to wocomoWILDLIFE: https://goo.gl/L5puvQ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wocomo ------- Scientific research done by Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International shows that the gorillas are facing today much more interaction between gorilla groups than before. Some of them end in conflict and fighting. The scientists use non-invasive methods to monitor stress hormones in gorillas to understand and identify stress factors to which gorillas might be sensitive, including effects of growing gorilla density and climate change. What causes stress? How do mountain gorillas cope with environmental changes and population dynamics? What might be future threats for this still small population? And how do conservationists need to adopt strategies? The government of Rwanda recently expressed plans to extend the national park to allow the endangered gorillas to have more space and ensure sustainable development. But this will mean that a whole community has to be relocated and looses their original land. Collaborating and including the local population living close to the mountain gorilla habitat is key. Can a buffer zone be the solution? What consequences will the population face? With these questions the film will also touch general questions around co-habitation of human and wildlife. The film takes the audience to the stunning and beautiful world of today more than 1000 mountain gorillas. It interviews park staff, local and international researchers to discuss what the future of mountain gorillas will look like. What happens if the mountain gorilla population continues to grow? What kind of life will these wild animals live? How can sustainable and responsible wildlife conservation succeed?
