Owls! In the dark Middle Ages they've been feared as witches' birds and messengers of death, but since time immemorial also revered as symbols of wisdom and as lucky charms. Today, the nocturnal birds are on the rise again and are strictly protected throughout Europe. There are 13 European owl species. The smallest is the very rare pygmy owl, the largest the eagle owl with a wingspan of up to 1,70 metres. Germany's densest and best-studied eagle owl population lives in the Eifel.
