They're stout animals, with blunt, rounded heads, fleshy, mobile snouts, and coats of thick, cylindrical or flattened spines which are mixed with long, soft hairs. Their powerful tail helps them to balance when they are in the tree tops. They eat bark, leaves, conifer needles, but also roots, stems, berries, seeds, nuts, grasses, and flowers. Some might even eat insects and small reptiles.
