Over the centuries the preservation of their living space has turned the Dutch into experts on water protection - using natural methods. Shepherd Huug Hagoort grew up on polders between branches of the Rhine; he knows the importance of dike maintenance. With his four hundred sheep he is on a daily mission to protect the dykes. Here in Ottoland the Rhine has always played an important role. At the beginning of the Rhine delta, the powerful current bifurcates into two waterways known as the Waal and the Pannerdens Kanaal.
