Arabian horses, according to legend, were sent to earth by Allah. Even the Prophet is said to have ridden on horses, from city to city and, of course, on his campaigns of conquest. Arabian horses are considered unique in the world, and animals from Jordan are particularly famous. Breeding them is a royal business here: in a green valley on the northern edge of the capital Amman, Princess Alia Bint Al-Hussein, eldest daughter of King Hussein, who died in 1999, runs the royal stables for the pure preservation of the Arabian horse. Today, there are 150 mares alone in the royal stables. They are deliberately kept under open skies - and treated like sports professionals: they receive daily fitness training, massages and acupuncture. Subhi Khalil, royal groom and rider, has the most experienced hands. He will also take part in what is probably the most important horse race in Arabia - the "Wadi Rum Cup", a 120-kilometre race across Jordan's most famous desert.
