UK Drone Rules Explained – Part 2 Many drone pilots believe that castles, monuments, or Historic Scotland sites automatically create a drone no-fly zone. But that’s not actually how the law works. In this video I explain the real rules around flying drones near castles, monuments and historic sites in Scotland, using the Wallace Monument as a practical example. We’ll look at what organisations such as Historic Environment Scotland or the National Trust for Scotland can control — and what they cannot control. The key distinction is simple: landowners can control access to their land, but they cannot create airspace restrictions. Flight Restriction Zones are created under aviation law, not by property ownership. We’ll also briefly discuss Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and why wildlife protection laws can sometimes affect drone flying even when the airspace itself is not restricted.
