Flying Home on Low Battery — When the Wind Turns This flight did not end as planned when the drone began a forced landing, While returning my DJI Mavic 3 to the home point on a low battery, a sudden shift in severe coastal wind turned the return leg into a full headwind. Ground speed dropped, power consumption spiked, and within moments the drone entered critical battery. With no safe margin left, the aircraft initiated a forced landing. Rather than let the drone descend unpredictably, I deliberately selected a ditch point that could be reached on foot and recovered safely. The landing site was chosen calmly, with visibility, access, and retrieval in mind. The drone was recovered without damage. At the end of the video, I explain the contingency planning that was already in place for this flight — including pre-planned early landing options — and why those preparations matter when flying in strong, changeable coastal conditions. This isn’t a crash video. It’s a real-world example of decision-making under pressure, and why wind awareness and contingency planning are as important as battery percentage.
