Thrilled to complete my first ultra after having Finley 2 years ago, especially after my DNF at Manx Mountain Marathon last month. Very much enjoyed the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia (UTS) 50k by UTMB, particularly finishing in just under 13 hours when the course cut off was 14 hours. My watch said 35 miles (56km!) with 3,560m ascent by the end! Whoop! This was thanks to coach Tim Piggot from HP3 Coaching who advises us to calculate prior where we should be and what we might eat or do when in the race, either to beat the cut offs or achieve a certain time. With my gradient profile of the race scribbled with timings for each summit and checkpoint and what I might eat between each I felt prepared, in control and zen throughout. I was also particularly impressed with how friendly all the runners were to each other throughout the race on such a hot day, asking if people were ok and being supportive. I found it a very welcoming atmosphere. My feet - I had to stop twice to put K-tape on the arches due to blistering there. Possibly took 30 mins total? It came off when sweaty, must experiment with using more tape to hold it on, different shoes (trying the Saucony Xodus Ultra 2s currently) and have ordered some Sidas insoles and socks, and some more Bridgedale socks. 2. Filming - this is my job so I need to do it, but I tend to take waaaaaay too much, thinking I can't miss out on capturing that beautiful view or this section of the course to show it to viewers etc. I film while moving along but it defo slows me down slightly and takes up more effort and brain power. Used 3 GoPro batteries AND my whole phone battery and still ran out just before the finish! Need to be more conservative on my Lakeland 50! 3. Queuing - this is inevitable on such a huge race with 1300 competitors combined with hikers on Wales' highest, most popular mountain. I was held up on the first rocky descent down the Pyg Track and the scrambling section of the 2nd climb up the Watkin Path. I don't know if this was actually a good thing in stopping me going too fast early on in the race or just delayed me. Either way I made it round within the cut offs and had a great race!
