Today’s Battle of the Bottles is a rye heavyweight matchup: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye versus Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye. I’m working through my pre-built sample matchups so they stay relevant, and this one absolutely delivered. I nosed and tasted both side-by-side, and right away the theme was “dark, rich, concentrated” with those big bourbon-adjacent notes I love—vanilla, brown sugar, caramel—layered with chocolate, tobacco, leather, and dark fruit. Both pours were high proof and had my mouth watering, but they showed up differently. Glass one was a full-on explosion—dense, intense, and immediate, with a long finish and just enough oak bitterness underneath the tongue to remind you it’s barrel proof. Glass two started more muted, then glided across the palate and ramped up hard at the back—sweet, spice, and then a back-palate bomb of chocolate, fruit, and brown sugar. In the end, I gave the win to glass one because that instant impact and concentration is exactly what I want in a pour. After the reveal, it was Jack Daniel’s at 130.2 proof ($74.99) beating Old Forester at 129.5 proof ($84.39)—both phenomenal values, and honestly two of my favorite ryes on the market. I also tried a blend of the two, and I wouldn’t mess with it. It softened the texture, got oakier and drier, and a fake banana note pushed forward that I didn’t love compared to how incredible each bottle is on its own.
