In this video I break down how I lit and shot the “Pink Balloon” music video for Jade LeMac using a camera robot / motion control arm. The core creative constraint was wild: build the entire video out of five long “one-takes” that dip-cut into each other. To keep those long takes from getting visually stale, we designed multiple looks inside the same setup—high-key beauty, moodier overhead, tungsten-y backlight moments, plus lighting cues that change mid-take. I walk you through the actual fixtures and why they were there: an Aputure 600X with a spotlight mount to “nuke” a warm sun moment, Vortex8s punching through an 8x8 for a clean beauty look, SkyPanel S60s blasting the white cyc to lift the background, and an Aputure 1200D overhead in a 150 softbox as a fast, low-crew alternative to rigging big overhead frames. I also talk camera choices (RED Helium + Fujinon 19–90 zoom) and why I went zoom: dolly zooms + robot track movement = more dynamic shots. The best takeaways are the mistakes: we bit off a little more than we could chew in one day, LED dimming curves can ruin mid-shot cues (and why a Source 4 Leko + Ratpac would’ve helped), robots are hard to light around (eyelight becomes a problem), and for timed cues you really want a board op instead of chasing it all on an iPad. I finish with the hexagon Astera tube eyelight rig around the lens—probably my favorite “why didn’t I do this sooner” moment.
