The Canon R1 is a flagship with flagship pricing, and you do get the big stuff: a huge battery, vertical grip, tons of controls, and one of the best EVFs I’ve looked through. You also get Canon’s consumer-friendly features like sensor shield and pre-capture RAW, plus more video options—CLog2 is awesome. But in my tests, buffering and autofocus getting distracted in complex scenes were the two big “Canon, you need to fix this” issues.
Pros
- +Excellent EVF (9.44M-dot OLED) and flagship ergonomics
- +Pre-capture RAW and sensor shield included
- +More video features than the Z6III; CLog2 looks great
- +Mechanical shutter slap sounded slightly softer than the Nikon in my test
Cons
- -Autofocus can be easily distracted in complex scenes (mannequin test) in photo and video
- -Buffering issues at high burst rates (including when dropping to 20fps)
- -Shadow dynamic range takes a hit compared to the Nikon when lifting underexposed shots
- -Very expensive compared to the Z6III
