I woke up to the most bizarre, hazy, cloudy sky in the Newport Beach area, and the second I saw it I knew I had to go shoot. I packed up my bag (plus all the film I already had loaded up) and basically just let the fog decide the plan. I didn’t really know where I was going—I opened Google Maps, searched a couple interesting spots, and started driving… while also realizing Newport drivers are mad aggressive. I tried a nature reserve first, immediately felt like I was 97% sure I was somewhere I wasn’t supposed to be, and bailed. I’m also kicking myself because I didn’t get up early enough—too many people for my liking. But then I made my way to Little Corona del Mar and it was exactly my favorite recipe for a shooting morning: rocky, beachy, foggy. Fog is obviously my favorite, but it’s tricky to photograph, so I talk through still tinkering with settings to keep the mood while making sure you can actually see what’s happening. I shot the morning on three cameras (Leica M11, Leica MP, and the Fujifilm GA645zi), and the black and white film is just gorgeous for these captures—so yeah, I’m excited to keep the film journey going.
