About This Video

Leica’s 100th anniversary is around the corner, so I figured it was the perfect time to finally talk about my favorite lens of all time: the Leica 50mm Summilux-M f/1.4 ASPH Special Edition (the rare 2015 reissue). This video is half review, half love letter—because I’ve used this tiny, mighty, mildly invincible lens for basically everything: over 200 weddings (it’s missed exactly one), personal travel, and years of real-world wear that’s 100% mine. I share how I randomly found it in the used section at B&H in NYC, shipped it home to dodge the sales tax (iconic era), sold my 35 Summicron, and never looked back. I break down what makes this specific version special: only 500 were made, it’s the 1959 barrel design in black chrome, brass construction, and it was designed by Peter Karbe. Then I get into what actually matters: how it renders. I’m a low-light wedding shooter and I live at f/1.4, and this lens gives me high-contrast RAW files that feel emotional, plus the weird lovely magic—rainbow flares, halation when I shoot into the sun (yes, I do that a lot), and bokeh that can look “smoky.” I also talk focusing—how I trained manual focus until it became second nature—and why sometimes a tiny miss (soft focus) can be more magical than clinical sharpness.
