About This Video

In this video I’m doing a crash course on how to be a great second shooter on a wedding day—aka how to be helpful, hireable, and not a walking red flag. I break down the real do’s and don’ts: familiarize yourself with the lead photographer’s work (without being weird about it), show up early, stay findable, and pay attention to where the lead is shooting so you can support the story instead of getting in the way. I also talk about shooting with intent (no one needs 97 shrimp skewer photos), not overshooting, and why reviewing/deleting images mid-wedding makes you look like you’ve never used a camera before. I get into practical etiquette too: don’t start your own photoshoot with the couple, don’t camp in aisles, don’t follow the couple/vendors on Instagram, and definitely don’t invite yourself to the afterparty. I share what actually helps me as a lead—being kind to guests, hustling during the moments you’re responsible for, keeping files backed up, and small “above and beyond” things like grabbing water or sending a quick BTS clip when appropriate. At the end, I give bonus tips for writing a strong intro email to get hired: personalize it, send real galleries, link a legit website, time your outreach well, and don’t sound desperate. Also: if you shoot Leica, yes, that can be a plus with me.
