Zero DTE iron condors collect $2.50. Five day iron condors on the same strikes collect $10.90. So obviously the five day is better right? Tom Preston ran the math and the answer is not that simple. Sell the five day and buy it back four days later when it has one day left: you make about $350. Sell a zero DTE every single day for those same four days at $2.40 each: you make close to $1,000. Even taking the zero DTE off at 50 percent profit gets you around $480. Both beat the five day approach if the SPX behaves normally. The reason zero DTE is popular is the speed of the profits. SPX does not typically make as big moves in one day as it does in five. That edge is the whole point. There is no best here.
