I focus on the idea that regrouping isn’t a trick; it’s just trading one ten for ten ones so the subtraction makes sense. As I explain it, you look at the ones first and decide if you have enough to subtract. If you don’t, you regroup from the tens, then subtract the ones, and finally subtract the tens. This is a great fit for math centers, small groups, intervention, or whole-class instruction when you want consistent language in Spanish.
