Trading Spaces: Music teachers helping kids thrive at Garry and Shaw Middle Schools

Two Spokane Public Schools middle school music teachers, Band Director Gabriel James and Orchestra Director Chase Chang, share an uncommon partnership—switching between Garry and Shaw halfway through each day to better serve their students. After recognizing a need for structure and support following COVID, they built trust, consistency, and high expectations that quickly transformed student attitudes, skill levels, and confidence. Through music, they create a sense of belonging and belief, helping students see their own potential and preparing them for future success in high school and beyond.
