About This Video

Behind me, I put two teams of returning artists into what I’m calling the Exodia Challenge—named after Yu-Gi-Oh, because you’re basically assembling a full figure like you’re collecting pieces of a monster. The twist is brutal: you draw a live model one body section at a time (head, torso, arms, legs), 15 minutes per round, and nobody is allowed to watch their teammates draw. Every person walks up completely blind to what’s already on the page, so you’re inheriting proportions, style, and chaos in real time. To make it even spicier, each artist gets locked into one material for the whole competition: ballpoint pen, black colored pencil, or a classic Ticonderoga pencil. Teams get 10 minutes to strategize, then it’s six rounds of head-to-head matchups where each artist contributes twice but can’t go back-to-back. You’ll see why everyone wanted a strong torso early—without an anchor, the whole thing collapses. By the end, both drawings come together way more cohesively than they have any right to, and that’s the fun: pressure, weird constraints, and a clash of styles that somehow synthesizes. You decide the winner by voting—team blue or team orange—and the winning team gets $100 each to Blick Art Materials.
