Round two of my art competition was a straight-up endurance + control test: four artists, one hour, vine charcoal, and a different weighted wrist guard for each person (.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 lb). The subject was this epic reflective shield, which sounds fun until you realize vine charcoal will smudge if you breathe near it—and the weight starts feeling real once the lactic acid kicks in. The whole point was to force better decision-making: values first, clean shapes, and keeping your hand from nuking your drawing. As I check in on everyone mid-round, you can see the problem-solving in real time: working left-to-right to avoid smudge city, adapting technique around a bad shoulder, and just trying to “organize the lights and darks” so the shield reads 3D. Vine is messy and weirdly unforgiving—push too hard and it can lift right back off—so getting those dark darks is a fight if you’re not used to it. By the end, even the 2-lb wrist guard artist was feeling the burn, but the results were honestly awesome.
