Round two of my drawing competition is a straight-up chaos test: 40 minutes to recreate a photo of a costume figure, but you’re locked into a randomly assigned color group and you have to use four specific mediums. Watching everyone react to their color pull is half the fun—blue wishing it was red, yellow getting dunked on as “the worst,” green getting the “value matters more than color” speech, purple getting manifested, and red getting hyped as passionate and aggressive. It’s a perfect setup for ego, strategy, and panic to all show up on paper. I’m basically using this challenge to prove what actually wins these battles: structure, value control, and smart mixed media choices—not just a “pretty color.” You’ll see people lay construction lines, build a framework first, then go crazy with color, while others talk big about intuition and dominance. At the halfway mark, confidence is peaking, and by the last 20 seconds it’s pure scramble energy. The takeaway is simple: color is a distraction if your values are trash, but if you can juggle materials and keep your value range clean, you can make any color family work.
