Round one of my art competition is pure chaos in the best way: I’ve got four artists, 45 minutes, and one brutal rule—recreate Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” using your non-dominant hand. On top of that, everyone’s locked into a different medium: charcoal pencils, dual tip markers, twister crayons, and soft pastels. It’s the perfect combo of “this is impossible” and “okay wait… I might be cooking.” Halfway through, you can see the real battle lines: crayons surprisingly start looking “solid,” markers turn into a no-erase, paper-getting-wet nightmare, charcoal becomes a palette puzzle you have to feel out, and pastels go full mud-fest—especially with super pale skin tones. The big takeaway is that left-hand drawing isn’t just shaky lines; it exposes how well you can simplify, block in big shapes, and stay calm when your medium fights back.
