In this video I put four artists through what I’d call the ultimate portrait pain test: a 45-minute self-portrait using vine charcoal… with a twist. Everyone’s locked into a different sized mirror, so the whole round becomes this weird mix of observation skills, angle control, and trying not to panic while your face keeps shifting every time you glance back and forth. I check in with each artist mid-round to see how they’re handling the time crunch, the material, and the mirror situation. Some people sprint out of the gate and refine, others intentionally stay loose because “developing too fast is a trap.” The mirrors end up being less of a problem than you’d think—lighting and value control are the real villains here. By the end, you hear the honest post-mortem: staying stuck in the mid-range, struggling to keep the same viewing angle, smudging, and that universal feeling of “if I had 10 more minutes, this would be dialed.” The takeaway: slow accuracy beats rushed rendering, and vine charcoal will humble you fast.
