Challenge one is a 30-minute skull drawing using white colored pencil on black paper—no erasing, and your brain has to flip values because you’re only adding light. Challenge two is a 40-minute mixed media figure recreation: everyone draws the same black-and-white costumed photo, but you pull one color family from a hat and you must use colored pencil, pastel, crayon, and alcohol markers. Then I get cruel: challenge three is a 45-minute portrait of me from life while I’m rotating, so you only get a few seconds per minute to actually see my face. The takeaway is simple: constraints expose your fundamentals fast—value structure, proportion, and how well you can stay calm when the plan immediately falls apart.
