In this video I put six artists through the third and final round of an ultimate drawing competition: a turning portrait from life. Yep—your subject is literally spinning, you’ve got 45 minutes, and half the time you’re not even facing them. I’ll be honest: I don’t like the turning portrait challenge. A spinning portrait will always take an artist out. But it’s also terrifying in a way that forces you to commit, simplify, and actually draw instead of babysitting details. Watching everyone adapt was the whole point. Some artists leaned into fundamentals—dimensionality, color, texture—while others took a creative risk and went for multiple portraits to keep drawing even when the chair turned away. The vibe shift was real: stress at the start (sharpened pencils, broken tips, chaos) and then the best strategy kicked in—have fun and keep moving. When we reviewed the final pieces, I genuinely wasn’t expecting the range of solutions, and somehow everyone still managed to capture my small chin. That’s the takeaway: constraints don’t just test you—they expose your habits and make you better fast.
