About This Video

In this video I posted up in Washington Square Park with a simple deal: draw me in 10 minutes, get $20. I set out a whole buffet of materials—colored pencils, acrylic markers, brush pens, pen and ink, charcoal with blending stumps—and then let total strangers (and a couple absolute killers) take their shot. The fun part is watching how different people solve the same problem under the same constraint: time pressure, weird dappled light, and me trying not to move like a terrible model. We talk to everyone from non-artists to pros. Max jumps in with charcoal and even breaks out the blending stump like a legend. My old friend Zac (king of the park) reminds everyone that clients care about the work, not your degree—and we get into the “art school vs skill building” reality. Then Lucy, a Studio SLEW regular who started drawing seriously about a year ago, absolutely cooks while explaining portrait fundamentals: squinting for big shapes, seeing the features as a whole, learning forms (spheres, pyramids), and why overlap matters. At the end I also explain why Studio SLEW runs so smoothly—3–5 sessions a week takes real infrastructure—and how Squarespace helps us handle ticketing and the professional side so we can keep making fine art fun and accessible.
