We'd unintentionally slow down exploration and demoralize our players by making them feel like they were being punished just for walking into a room. I've been there, watching my players get frustrated, always obsessively searching for traps instead of enjoying the adventure. But it doesn't have to be like that! By rethinking the purpose of traps – whether they're meant to remind players of danger, crank up the drama in combat, split the party, or even be an encounter all their own – you can transform them into a thrilling part of your campaign. The biggest game-changer for me was implementing the Click Rule. This simple yet incredibly effective technique allows players a split-second to react to a trap before its full effects kick in. Imagine the tension as they hear a "click" or feel a shifting flagstone, knowing they've triggered something, but not what! This rule, combined with understanding Passive Perception as an "always on" ability (and not requiring a roll if it meets the DC), and consistently leaving clues for your players, will revolutionize how you run traps. No more boring, frustrating encounters – just pure D&D fun. 00:00 Are Traps Ever Fun? 01:22 Reasons for Traps 04:06 Passive Perception 07:35 Leave Clues 08:19 The Game Changing Tip
