About This Video

In this Homelab series video, I’m showing you DumbPad, which is basically the simplest self-hosted notepad in a web GUI. You hit a webpage, type your notes, and that’s pretty much the whole point—no clutter, no fancy features, just a place to dump ideas and tasks. I walk through the UI real quick: you can rename your current pad, create multiple notepads (which is honestly the best feature, because nobody wants everything jammed into one page), switch between them, and download a notepad as a .txt if you want to save it locally. It also auto-saves, so you can refresh as much as you want and your stuff is still there. For setup, I stick with the quick start Docker command from the DumbPad GitHub, because that’s the easiest way to get it running. I show how I copy the command into a little script, add “-d” so it runs detached in the background, chmod it, and start it up. By default it’s on port 3000, so you can access it with HTTP if you don’t have HTTPS, or put it behind your reverse proxy like I do. If you enable the PIN parameter, you’ll get prompted for that before you can use the pad—nice and simple for basic access control across all your devices.
