About This Video

In this homelab series video, I’m walking through DumbBudget — a super simple self-hosted budgeting tool from DumbWare.io. The whole vibe here is “no complexity”: you get a clean dashboard with your balance, a quick view of income vs expenses, and an easy way to add transactions. I show how I can toss in something like a $1,000 paycheck as income, add expenses, and use their basic categories (bills, food, transport, other) to keep things organized. It’s not trying to be some massive finance platform — it’s just straightforward expense tracking that you can actually stick with. Then I jump into setup, and honestly it’s pretty easy. On the GitHub page there’s a Docker section, so I just copy their run config into a little start.sh script, set my data path, and optionally add a PIN so random people (or your friends) aren’t browsing your transactions — especially the homelab purchases. By default it runs on port 3000, and I show accessing it directly or through my setup with Nginx + HTTPS and local DNS (like dumbbudget2.dragon.local). Once it’s up, you log in with the PIN and you’re ready to track spending, filter income/expenses, adjust the time range, and even export everything to CSV if you want to do fancier stuff in Excel.
