big thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video- make sure to apply my code for 10% discount at the checkout! https://squarespace.com/anita In this video, I’m sharing the honest reality of shooting self-portraits as a photographer. This shoot took place in a Moroccan-style villa, and I walk you through my full self-portrait process - from setting up a camera on a timer and taking hundreds of images, to experimenting with poses, reviewing the results, and repeating the process until something finally works. I talk openly about why self-portrait photography is often much harder than it looks. When you’re both the photographer and the subject, you’re limited by angles, stuck trusting a tripod, and posing without being able to clearly see the frame. A lot of the creative control you have when shooting someone else simply isn’t there, and that can make executing a strong vision really challenging. I also show what doesn’t work. Many of the ideas I try never make it into the final edit - and in this shoot, entire sections were scrapped completely. Self-portraits involve a lot of trial and error, patience, and letting go of ideas that just don’t translate on camera. If you’re interested in self-portrait photography, posing yourself for photos, or seeing a realistic behind-the-scenes look at how photographers actually work, this video breaks down the process honestly—no shortcuts, no pretending it’s effortless.
