Here is a quick demo of the Remo 22" ocean drum. This version is relatively new to the Ocean Drum Lineup, and I really like it. I have several other sizes, but this one has more low-end and is much louder than my other versions of this instrument.

About This Video

In this video I’m demoing the Remo 22" Ocean Drum—one of the newer sizes they put out (around 2020), and honestly it’s the one I’ve been reaching for the most. I’ve got a few other sizes (16, 18, 20), but this 22 has noticeably more low-end and it’s way louder than my other versions. I’m cutting a track for a record session, so I figured I’d film a quick run-through before I record it, just to show you what it can do in a real-world context. I talk through the two different heads on this drum: one side is a coated cloth head that’s more mellow, and the other side is a clear plastic head that’s more aggressive—better if you want that “surfer” thing to really speak. The big technique takeaway is control: start with the shot/beads centered, stand still, and move the drum slowly for light surf. When you want the “tide coming in,” you increase the motion—then you’ve got to know how to stop it cleanly by laying it flat and waiting (or you can force it, but you’ll hear it). It’s a simple instrument, but it’s extremely sensitive to motion, so the details matter.
