In this video, built environment professionals from across the North East share their experiences with microaggressions in the workplace and share tips for addressing them in practice. Architects design buildings for people. However, every creative journey requires collaboration at all levels. Some interactions can have negative effects and consequences. These can manifest as offhand remarks or something more subtle – whether intended or not – that might reference a person’s gender, ethnicity, sexuality or another personal or cultural characteristic. The RIBA Microaggressions Toolkit defines the term, provides examples, and offers positive responses and strategies to not only deal with them personally but also mitigate them in a profession-wide setting.
