Planting thickly can help eliminate the need for mulches and weeds. But how to choose the best plants that work well and create harmony? In this video I document how I planted out a southern facing, dry garden bed in my Chester County Pennsylvania garden, zone 6b. I focus on repetition within a specific plant genus as well as repeating forms and foliage types. I also limit the total number of different kinds of plants within a certain area. This helps the plant selection process become easier and creates a harmonized energy within a certain flower bed. I also aimed to plant evergreen ground covering plants as much as possible to act like living mulches. This not only helps create a nice visual, but adds functionality and keep the bed looking good all year round. By choosing a few robust types of plants that each provide a specific purpose, you can achieve a lovely garden. As always with gardening, the key is patience.
