In this tutorial: Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) in Photoshop gives you plenty of control when converting a color image to black and white (monochrome). Simple conversions to monochrome usually look somewhat flat. The controls in ACR allow you to add contrast or 'punch' to the image by reducing or increasing contributions of various colors in the original image and adjusting the tonal balance with curves. Once you've completed the changes in ACR, you can then open the image in Photoshop to make additional changes if desired.
