White balance explained - Different light sources have different colour temperatures. These are measured in Kelvin, indicated by a capital K. Low colour temperatures are called "warm" because they cast an orange light, like the light at sunrise or sunset. High colour temperatures are considered to be "cool" because they look bluish, such as the midday sun or a daylight bulb in your home. These different temperatures have the effect of making anything white in a photograph look like it is not white at all. Our brains automatically adjust our eyes to different light temperatures so that white looks white, no matter what temperature the light may be. Your camera doesn't do this, or at least doesn't do it very well. If your camera becomes confused about what white should be in any given photograph, your images can turn out to look unnatural or not true to life.
