Knee Walking for Hip Strength π±π»ββοΈβ¬οΈ | Low Tone Pediatric PT Pediatric Physical Therapy with Myla | @pediatricPTexercises Iβm back with my co-instructor, Myla π±π»ββοΈ β an 8-year-old with low tone and Down syndrome β and her sister Maycie (age 11) π±π»ββοΈ joins us again to help demonstrate todayβs activity. In our last video, we worked on a crab position to strengthen extension muscles. In this video, we build on that idea with knee walking in tall kneel, which is another excellent way to target hip extension and trunk control. This activity works: β’ Hip extension β’ Trunk stability β’ Lateral hip strength (sideways walking) β’ Motor control in tall kneel These muscle groups are often weaker in children with low tone, especially when trying to maintain upright posture without collapsing. Youβll first see both girls walk forward on their knees in tall kneel. Then we challenge Myla with backward knee walking β which is noticeably harder. She requires: β’ Hand hold for support β’ Occasional physical assistance to guide leg movement β’ Help staying up in tall kneel instead of dropping to low kneel Finally, we work on sideways knee walking, which targets the inside and outside hip muscles. This direction is also more challenging and requires two hands held for support. β¨ What Youβll Learn π§π½ Why backward knee walking is harder than forward πͺπΏ How tall kneeling builds hip extension and trunk strength π― Why children with low tone drop to low kneel when challenged βοΈ How sideways knee walking strengthens lateral hip muscles π§π»π§π½π§πΎ How siblings and helpers can support more difficult directions π₯ Timestamps 0:03 Introduction & who is here 0:17 Why we are working on hip extension 0:32 Forward knee walking in tall kneel 0:45 Backward knee walking with assistance 1:07 Using hand support to maintain tall kneel 1:22 Practicing backward stepping pattern 1:45 Continued backward practice with cueing 1:53 Sideways knee walking setup 2:06 Sideways walking for lateral hip strength 2:13 Opposite direction sideways walking 2:17 Why hip strength matters for low tone 2:23 Closing Watch Mylaβs full playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAkJbMrHyKjMZYC1aYPuXrp-I9VFpNhCu Helpful for parents & professionals searching for: Knee walking exercise for kids Tall kneeling activities for low tone Down syndrome physical therapy exercises Hip strengthening for children Lateral hip strengthening activities Pediatric physical therapy exercises for hypotonia Whether youβre a parent, therapist, educator, or caregiver π¨πΎβπ©π½βπ§πΌ, this activity builds hip strength and trunk control while helping children practice movement in an upright kneeling position.
