Reaching with Rotation π§πΎπ« | Sitting Balance & Trunk Control for Kids with CP | Pediatric Physical Therapy with Amy Sturkey @pediatricPTexercises Oh my goodness β Alexis is back, and she is on fire today! π Please meet my amazing co-instructor, Alexis Sanderson (age 10Β½). Sheβs a bright, expressive girl with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy who communicates non-verbally but understands everything around her. Her joy and determination shine in every session. β¨ In this video, weβre building on previous sitting-balance work by introducing reaching with rotation β a huge skill for trunk control. Alexis sits on a soft round cushion about chair height. Itβs just unstable enough to challenge her core but still safe with supervision. Todayβs goal? Turning her trunk to reach behind and beside her β first to the left, then to the right β while keeping her balance. To motivate her, we use playful choices: a doll and Dash from The Incredibles. Dash brings out some wonderful βIβm too fast for you!β moments! ππ¨ I sit behind her and provide gentle guidance at her hips and trunk to help her rotate. Interestingly, Alexisβs rotation to the right is better than to the left, even though the right side is typically her βharderβ side. I suspect this is because she often rotates toward the right in daily life so she can use her better left hand to grab items on that side β giving her lots of natural practice with rightward rotation. π‘ What weβre working on: βοΈ Trunk rotation for functional sitting βοΈ Core strength and balance reactions βοΈ Reaching behind the body with control βοΈ Motivating participation with meaningful play (Dash ππ¨ & dolls) βοΈ Encouraging use of the more-involved side Rotational reaching is an incredibly valuable part of sitting development β especially for kids with cerebral palsy β because it strengthens deep trunk muscles and teaches controlled movement in all directions. π Alexis shows so much determination as she twists, reaches, and returns upright. I hope this session gives you ideas for playful, effective ways to build sitting balance at home or in therapy. π₯ Watch all of Alexisβs videos (playlist): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAkJbMrHyKjNQyu5vJsft6bWiGCmEU-nR π More from me: Website: www.pediatricPTexercises.com Facebook: Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises Email: amysturkey@gmail.com β οΈ Important note: These videos are for educational purposes only and are not a substitute for in-person pediatric physical therapy.
