Ellia #28 – Rounded Sitting? Try This Low-Back Cue for Upright Sitting | Pediatric Physical Therapy Meet Ellia 👶🏻👶🏽👶🏿 Ellia is 12 months old and was born one month early. Adjusted for prematurity, she is developmentally closer to 11 months. In this video, pediatric physical therapist Amy Sturkey demonstrates a simple way to encourage more upright sitting when a baby tends to sit with a rounded back. Ellia’s twin brother, Eli, often sits with his pelvis tucked under and his back rounded. When babies sit this way, it can make it harder to develop the upright trunk control needed for reaching, playing, and eventually transitioning in and out of sitting. One easy strategy is to provide gentle support at the low back. By placing a light hand at the lower back and gently pressing forward, Amy encourages the natural arch of the spine. This cue helps the pelvis tip forward and promotes a taller, more upright sitting posture. The same technique can also be practiced while sitting on the floor with your baby. This is a simple, hands-on way to help babies begin to experience what more upright sitting feels like. This strategy may help to: • Encourage a more upright sitting posture • Promote natural spinal extension • Improve trunk alignment in sitting • Support early postural control • Reduce habitual rounded sitting 👶🏿👶🏽👶🏻 Many babies experiment with different sitting positions as they learn to balance and move. Gentle cues like this can help them discover a stronger, more upright posture. 💛 Simple. Direct. Easy to try at home. 🌟 In this video, you’ll learn: • How pelvic position affects upright sitting • Where to place your hand on the low back • How a gentle cue can encourage spinal extension • A simple way to practice upright sitting 🎯 Helpful for those searching: Baby sits with rounded back Baby slumped sitting posture Encourage upright sitting baby Infant trunk control exercises Improve baby sitting posture Pediatric physical therapy for infants ⏱️ Timestamps: 0:00 – Intro 0:07 – Meet Ellia: age & prematurity 0:21 – Rounded sitting posture 0:35 – Providing low-back support 0:52 – Encouraging the spinal arch 1:17 – Practicing upright sitting 1:45 – Final thoughts 📺 Watch all of Eli & Ellia’s videos here (playlist): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAkJbMrHyKjMHzxJBJ5Fa0XYo-yiNGT3C ⚠️ Safety Note: These videos are educational and are not a replacement for in-person physical therapy.
