Black water in Amazon rivers is mainly caused by high levels of dissolved organic matter from decaying plant material, which stains the water dark brown or black. Black water rivers are common in areas covered by dense forests, where the decomposition of leaves and other organic matter releases tannins that color the water. I created a black water ecosystem tank inspired by the Amazon River. We can’t fully call this a biotope but it still provides a living environment for the fish that is close to their natural habitat. I will continue to share updates as new episodes.
