In this video I build a low-tech planted aquarium using simple, affordable materials—yes, even garden soil—without CO₂ and without a filter. The goal is a calm, natural ecosystem where the plants do the heavy lifting and the tank becomes something you can sit in front of and relax with, instead of another source of stress. I set it up as a species-focused home for Sparkling Gouramis, because they’re small but incredibly striking, and I want to observe their behavior and growth stages in a stable, natural environment. I also talk about the bigger idea behind these setups: you can absolutely create a beautiful, sustainable aquarium without spending a lot of money or relying on lots of technology, but not every tank should be run the same way. Whether you do water changes, whether you use a filter, and how you design the system depends on the animals inside and what you expect from the tank. This build is a 50-liter (40×35×35 cm) planted layout with a mix of easy, ecosystem-friendly plants, and I share the tank’s progress at day 60 as the system settles and evolves.
