The idea is that the VM only has access to your externally facing email, and that the VM email account is not linked to anything you care about. Online banking etc should have a private address that is never accessed inside the VM 1. Enable file extensions!! Windows hides them by default, spotting a PDF file is in fact an SCR file or an EXE file could save your life savings! 3. Always assume anyone that is emailing you is lieing about who they are! Where possible just log on to their website, their app, or pick up the phone and dial the number listed on their website to do whatever they're asking you to do in the email. 4. Never click the links in the email unless you absolutely have to, even from friends and family as they may have a virus that is sending out dangerous links. 5. If you are going to download and open attachments then do it on a virtual machine, or a separate computer that you don't care about and that is not logged into anything you care about. Use a different OS on your VM if you can, Linux is free and far less likely to get a virus. 6. Don't trust antivirus, I did and it didn't work. Antivirus is good to have as it might catch something you missed, but don't rely on it to confirm a file as the file might be disguised. 7. Don't trust Wifi connections in public places.
