In this video I’m talking to the people staring at the AirPods Max 2 price tag and wondering, “Do I really need to spend $550?” The AirPods Max are their own thing—if you’re deep, deep, deep in the Apple ecosystem, the device switching is genuinely great, and they do sound good. My issue is simple: the “Max 2” isn’t enough of an upgrade over the previous USB‑C version to justify the money. So I walk through what I’d buy instead, based on what I’ve used (and what I’ve learned from the comments and real-world feedback). For bang-for-the-buck noise canceling, Sony is still hard to beat: the WH‑1000XM6 is lighter, more comfortable, has killer ANC, and a 30-hour battery—while costing about $100 less. If you want to spend way less and still get a great experience, the XM4 is still a monster deal. I also cover Bose QuietComfort for comfort and a more tame sound signature, Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3 for a nicer, more “audiophile” build and feel, and a couple aspirational picks like Sennheiser and the Focal Bathys—because if I’m spending that kind of money, I want it to sound like it.
