About This Video

After what felt like it took way longer than it should, Day 5 is the final stretch of my DIY backyard makeover—and the big reveal. Before I could call it “done,” I still had a bunch of little (and not-so-little) tasks to check off, starting with the privacy fence. I went with the HOFT privacy fence kit from Home Depot because, from my research, it was the simplest option that still matched the sleek look I was going for (not sponsored). The kit’s pretty straightforward: metal posts, mounting plates, spacers, and caps—then you just supply your own fence boards and screws. I installed the whole thing solo, which is totally doable, but leveling and mounting the posts would’ve been easier with an extra set of hands—especially the corner post where everything needs to stay straight in two directions. My red level came in clutch, and I used tape instead of pencil marks to keep my post placement clean. From there it was cut boards to size, slide them in, spacer, repeat—and keep checking level as you go (there’s an adjustment screw at the bottom if things drift). I wrapped up by filling the two garden beds with soil and adding a silk screen behind the wall to keep soil from seeping through. The result turned the backyard into an actual extension of the house—welcoming, usable, and honestly unreal compared to the before.
