In this video I show you how to build your own NAS (Network Attached Storage) using FreeNAS—now officially TrueNAS CORE. For home or small business, this is one of the smartest ways to get secure, flexible, and cost‑effective storage without paying enterprise licensing fees. I explain why I like TrueNAS so much: it’s open-source, based on FreeBSD, and it can turn an old PC or server into a powerful file server. I cover the key features that make TrueNAS strong in real life—ZFS for data integrity protection, snapshots, compression, and replication. Then I walk through what you need to start (64‑bit system, minimum 8GB RAM for ZFS, at least two hard drives, and a USB drive) and the step-by-step setup: download the TrueNAS ISO, make a bootable USB with Rufus, install TrueNAS on a separate drive (not your data disks), and access the web UI from the IP shown on the console. Finally, I explain how to create ZFS storage pools (RAIDZ/mirror/stripe), make datasets for backups/media/documents, and configure shares like SMB, NFS, AFP, and iSCSI. I also talk about enabling services (SSH, rsync, snapshots), running plugins like Plex/Nextcloud, and monitoring the system health dashboard with regular updates.
