In this live session, I’m back again to show you how I mix Afrobeat vocals from scratch—no shortcuts. I start with the raw vocal and the beat, and before I touch any “sweetening,” I focus on fixing problems first. That’s my rule: don’t just start tweaking stuff. For this particular vocal, I could hear a lot of sibilance, so I controlled that first with a de-esser, then I moved into my EQ (and yes, you know I love the old version of FabFilter). I cut the bad frequencies, then I A/B it so you can hear the difference—cleaner, thicker, and more controlled. After that, I use a multiband compressor to tame the midrange (around the 400 Hz area) without doing a hard static cut. Instead of deleting the tone, I compress it only when it builds up. Then I go into vocal compression with FabFilter Pro-C (manual attack/release) and I stack it with an ARVOX compressor to keep the vocal steady and clear. Finally, I add my reverb and delay using my StudioRack preset chain, plus a doubler and sidechain compression on the reverb so the mix stays clean. And like I promised, I’m sharing the exact preset I used so you can test it yourself.
